Catch 'Em
Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles on a sesame seed bun. If you grew up in the seventies like I did, you recognize that slogan. And why do so many of us still remember this famous advertising jingle today? Because McDonald's set the bait, and they hooked us.
It's very true that each business needs something to retain a customers interest. Songs with lyrics that rhyme, a mascot, or a funny saying are what the world remembers. So when you are establishing your familiarity with John Q Public, what do you use? You have to come up with something easy to retain. Something memorable. Whether you are tugging at a client's heart, or their funny bone, it has to make a good impression. You have to set the trap and catch them.
It can be pretty simple if you sell diapers. A cute, cuddly baby crawling and laughing will be easy, but what if you sell tires? What's fun about that? The point is whether you dress up like a pirate in your marketing ads or show someone eating chocolate cake, let it be consistent. The famous commercial that I mentioned for McDonald's earlier ran for 9 years off and on. It became a part of our daily language. It was fun. Kids wanted to learn the words. And McDonald's made a fortune because of it.
Take some time to think about your business and what you wish to project. If you do sell tires, you may feel your options are limited. But this doesn't have to be the case. You could prove how reliable and sturdy they are by having a tire travel to all fifty states, even talking to people along the way. Whatever you chose, just remember that your audience has a short attention span. Make it quick. Make it recognizable. And make it informative. That way, you will catch all of those big fish.
