Just A Little Funny
What does Ronald McDonald, Geico Insurance, and Lucille Ball all have in common? They have all been used by advertisers to make us laugh. Comedy makes buyers relaxed, and in turn, let down their guard. This of course leads to higher sales. So while you may want to put together an air tight marketing campaign, don't forget to add some humor.
Being funny makes other people feel like they can relate to us. It releases tension. We feel at ease. Laughter puts the consumer in a good mood. When they chuckle, they retain that memory, which can mean they remember our product or service. Who doesn't want more of that?
These days there is what I refer to as "stupid comedy". Antics and escapades to grab your attention for a short time. I think this is a mistake. Talking down to your audience is never a good idea. We should always assume our audience is intelligent and treat them as such. So your humor has to be smart. Cutting edge with a bullet of information if you will. Leave them laughing as a comedienne would say.
Advertising is serious business, but letting your hair down so to speak shows your public that you are human as well. And hey, couldn't the world use more laughs right about now?
